Barn Owl Nursery is expanding the number of days of the small lavender festival to celebrate the blooming and harvest times of the many varieties of lavenders and lavandins. This event begins when the English lavenders are starting to bloom, just as the Spanish lavenders are finishing, the first part of June. During the 10 days of the fest, there will be special information and displays on growing and using lavender. Lavender products and fresh and dried lavender bouquets will be for sale. There will be samples of lavender treats to taste, with recipes to make in your own home. If you love lavender, this is the time to visit! Usually, English lavenders start blooming in our test gardens about the second week of June. For the next few weeks, we harvest the flowers for drying. It is an excellent time to choose from the great selection of lavender plants that are available at the nursery. |
English Lavender blooming at the Nursery |
Throughout the end of June and for two weeks of July, you will see many shades of the purple flowering lavenders with the pink and white flowering varieties mixed in. The air will be filled with the sweet fragrance of lavender as we harvest and hang the lavender bunches to dry. There are demonstrations on how to make lavender wands and other small, fresh lavender favors and gifts. We usually start harvesting the longer stemmed, lavandins the second week of July. We begin making longer lavender wands and start mixing the lavender flowers with other fresh herbs to create beautiful, fragrant herbal wreaths.
During this time, we offer an opportunity for you to visit the nursery and collect fresh and dried lavender and herb bouquets to make your own special lavender and herb gifts and decorations.
